Glossary

A toll/electronic toll is a toll for using selected toll roads. Drivers are charged by electronic system. The legal basis for this toll in Poland is the Act of 21 March 1985 on Public Roads (Journal of laws of 1985, No 14, item 60 with later amendments).

A road toll is a toll for using selected sections of national toll motorways managed by the GDDKiA paid in a manual way in dedicated toll booths. The legal basis for a toll road in Poland is the Toll Motorways and National Road Fund Act (Journal of laws of 1994, No 127, item 627 with later amendments).

Electronic Toll Collection System – viaTOLL is an electronic system that charges road users for using selected sections of toll road network. In Poland this system is called viaTOLL.

Toll-charging sections are selected sections of toll motorways managed by the GDDKiA. It will be possible for drivers of motor vehicles and combinations of vehicles with the maximum permissible weight of over 3.5 tonnes to make electronic payments for those toll sections.

The toll road network is a network of selected sections of motorways, expressways and national roads managed by the GDDKiA where the electronic toll collection system is in force. An up-to-date toll roads network and the rates of electronic toll payment is specified in the Regulation of Council of Ministers on the list of national roads or their sections on which the toll shall be collected electronically and the rates of electronic toll payment, as laid down on 22 March 2011.

Gantries/Toll Gantries are constructions fitted with antennas and built along the toll road network. The antennas enable communication between the transmitters and the on-board unit – the viaBOX - mounted on the vehicle. Each time a vehicle equipped with viaBOX technology passes beneath the gantry the driver is charged for that particular section of toll road. Gantries are necessary elements of the system.

A toll payer account is a collection of data relating to all vehicles registered by road users in the viaTOLL system. There are two types of users accounts: pre-pay account and post-pay account. This data includes chosen means and channels of payment and previous transactions.

viaAUTO is a on-board electronic device dedicated to motor vehicles and combinations of vehicles with a  maximum permissible weight of below 3.5 tonnes. viaAUTO enables identification of the vehicle using the toll gantries fitted with antennas. If a vehicle is not equipped with this device the toll cannot be charged by the electronic toll collection system.

Motor vehicles or combinations of vehicles with the maximum permissible weight of below 3.5 tonnes are the vehicles required to pay tolls on some sections of toll motorways. By no later than 1 January 2012 drivers of those vehicles will have the possibility to pay for toll motorways using viaTOLL system. Those vehicles include:

    • single-track vehicles and single-track vehicles with trailers
    • cars and cars with trailer with maximum permissible weight below 3.5 tonnes
    • vans and vans with trailer with maximum permissible weight below 3.5 tonnes
    • minibuses and minibuses with trailers which in total have fewer than 9 seats
